Description

The Dell EMC PowerEdge R640 server is part of Dell’s 14th generation line of servers and supports Intel’s new Xeon Scalable Family of processors, which offer a 27% increase in processing cores. It supports an impressive 1536GB of memory and up to 58TB of internal storage that’s a perfect fit for dense scale-out computing. Optional NVDIMMs and NVMe drives reduce latency and boost application performance. Data is kept safe with built-in cyber resilient security features, including System Erase technology, which enables administrators to securely wipe all data from the server’s components quickly and efficiently. Dell’s EMC OpenManage portfolio automates the majority of routine management tasks and begins working the moment the network and power cables are connected.

Performance

Intel’s new C620 chipset supports both the first and second-generation Intel Scalable Family of processors featuring up to 28 cores per processor, or 56 cores in a two-processor application. This system is designed to reduce total cost of ownership by up to 65 percent and enable 4.2 times more VMs per server than the previous generation. Intel’s Scalable Family of processors deliver a 50% increase in memory bandwidth for compute-intensive workloads.

Memory

Flexible memory configurations on the Dell EMC R640 server can support up to 24 registered (RDIMM) or load reduced (LRDIMM) DDR4 memory modules in a dual-processor configuration, or half that amount with a single processor. In addition, this system can support up to 12 non-volatile (NVDIMM) memory modules to boost application performance, data security, and write endurance. Two processors and twelve 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB RDIMM modules must be installed to augment the NVDIMMs. 8GB RDIMM modules are not compatible with NVDIMMs, and two processors are required for any configuration that supports NVDIMMs. Memory speeds up to 2933MT/s are supported depending on the DIMM type, memory configuration, and processor model. This system supports a maximum of 1536GB, perfect for in-memory applications like Hadoop.

Storage

SAS, SATA, and Nearline SAS hard drives or SSDs are all supported on this system allowing administrators to choose the optimum configuration to maximize application performance. On the front of the system, there’s room for up to ten SFF drives or four LFF drives, both of these configurations also support an optional rear mounted drive cage to install two more SFF drives. The Dell R640 server also supports up to eight NVMe drives to reduce latency, and maximize storage performance. The system also supports an internal Dual SD module (IDSDM) with integrated vFlash for redundant failsafe hypervisor support.

Expansion

There are three PCIe 3.0 expansion slots, all of which are x16 slots. One USB port can be found on the front of the system with another two ports in the back. Administrators can choose between four different networking solutions- 4 x 1GE, 2 x 10GE + 2 x 1GE, 4 x 10GE, or 2 x 25GE. Two VGA ports are divided between the front and the back of the chassis and a NVIDIA NVS310 is available as a PCIe card to support video.

Management

Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller 9 (iDRAC9) is embedded in every Gen14 PowerEdge server and starts working the moment a power and network cable is connected. iDRAC9 provides advanced, secure, remote management capabilities and automates the majority of common management tasks. Administrators can manage Dell PowerEdge R640 Server locally or from a remote location using a smart phone or tablet with Dell’s OpenSync2 technology. When the system is ready to be redeployed, data from local storage and embedded flash devices can easily be erased with Dell’s System Erase technology.

Summary

The Dell EMC PowerEdge R640 server optimizes application performance with support for Intel’s new Scalable Family of processors, NVDIMMs, and NVMe drives. It can handle even the most demanding compute workloads. Support for both small and large form factor drives provide configuration flexibility and NVMe drives reduce latency while optimizing performance. Integrated security provides protection against unauthorized changes to the firmware and other malicious threats. Remote server management is made easy with Dell’s OpenManage portfolio, which also saves administrator time by automating a multitude of routine management tasks.
